On December 8th there was another strike by students of the UNIVERSITY OF PUERTO RICO. Again there are angry protests over the hikes in tuition. Doesn't the government understand that these young people already have loans and the last thing they need is get further into debt. Furthermore, there are not enough jobs on the island for all of the future graduates and many are forced to leave their families and travel abroad to practice in their area of expertise. Where is the United States government in all of this? Puerto Rico is a commonwealth. Why is it we are spending so much on aiding other people around the globe?

NO--there has been no public documentation of this event in the United States. Some of us only know about the incident because we have family members that actually study in the university. These students are absolutely correct to strike and couragous to stand up for what they believe. The lack of publicity simply points to the fact that Puerto Rico is a commonwealth with a very strategic location which is in the interest of the USA government. Does our nation want the international community to actually know what is going on within a small island under the umbrella of "American protection"?
These students will not give up. The professors are also fighting for rights. As both parties are united they will not give up until some type of negotiations are reached which are beneficial to the future of public university education on the island. It will be a long battle and students may face violence at the hands of some police--an order which will be given by corrupt officials. We can all probably guess who governs these "elected" subhumans that are capable of harming idealistic students.
